Below, see how changes to your cycle time can impact your KPIs and performance. To improve cycle times on the plant floor, you need real-time visibility into OEE, downtime, and plant performance. Nulogy Smart Factory, along with Nora, our built-in AI assistant, keeps you up to speed, so issues reach you before they cost a shift.
Cycle Time is an essential manufacturing KPI to understand in manufacturing. It is used by ERP and MES systems for scheduling, purchasing and production costing. It is also a critical part of the OEE calculation (use our OEE calculator here). Fortunately, cycle time is easy to calculate and understand.
Cycle time can be measured in several different ways, depending on how production data is tracked and reported. Manufacturing analytics platforms, such as Nulogy, commonly support multiple units of measure to align with different processes and reporting needs. The most frequently used cycle time formats include:
Selecting the right unit of measure helps ensure cycle time data is easy to interpret, compare, and act on across teams and production lines.
Manufacturers commonly use three terms to describe cycle time. While the names are similar, the exact definitions can vary by organization and production environment.
In the sections that follow, we will explain how to calculate cycle time using any of these definitions and how to convert between different units of measure. While there appear to be several cycle time formulas, they all fall into one of two basic categories:
The cycle time calculation is based on two key inputs:
Cycle times often need to be converted into another unit of measure. You can use the bubbles below as a cheat sheet to convert the various formulas into parts per minute.
Stop waiting until the end of a shift — or the end of the week — to understand what happened on your shop floor. Nulogy Smart Factory gives manufacturers a live production monitoring system to track OEE, downtime, scrap, throughput, and line performance from a single connected dashboard.

If we could save fifteen minutes on machine time per operator, just by eliminating paperwork to be more efficient — we calculated we could save over $75,000. We have easily saved over $100,000 just in efficiency and paperwork alone.
Get the real-time visibility you need to understand what is happening across every line, shift, and site, without waiting for spreadsheets, manual updates, or Monday morning reports.
Replace chaotic manual processes with real-time connected visibility across every machine, line, and shift.

Nora is the manufacturing AI assistant built into Smart Factory and Maintenance. No dashboards to dig through. Ask in plain English and watch what comes back.

Your data stays yours. Nora never fabricates an answer, learns your line names and part numbers, and is never used to train external models.

You notice the problem, then go ask. By then the line was already down.

“What gets tracked, gets improved.”
“Reduction in overtime was exactly what we were looking to do… and that’s exactly what we have achieved.”
“The real-time reporting at the manufacturing level is the biggest benefit.”
“Now that we have the transparency into the process, our OEE availability has increased significantly.”
Oral Biotech used Nulogy Smart Factory to replace manual production reporting with real-time production monitoring. By capturing live shop floor data - including previously missed short stops - the team gained better visibility into performance issues, improved line efficiency, increased OEE from around 60% to close to 80%, and significantly reduced scrap and rework.
A production monitoring system helps manufacturers track, measure, and improve shop floor performance in real time.
Nulogy Smart Factory connects to your existing equipment — no rip-and-replace — and starts capturing live production data in days, not months. Track OEE, downtime, scrap, throughput, and line performance from a single connected dashboard across every shift, line, and site.

Operators log production events, downtime reasons, and job progress directly from the shop floor. Data flows automatically into a single connected platform — no spreadsheets, no manual entry.
Supervisors and managers get instant visibility into OEE, downtime, throughput, and line performance across every shift, line, and site — so they can spot issues and act before they impact output.
Cycle time is the time it takes to produce one unit, for example 45 seconds per part. It’s different from takt time, the pace needed to hit customer demand (if a customer needs 800 units a shift, takt time is 36 seconds). Comparing the two tells a plant manager whether a line is actually keeping pace with demand, not just running.
Cycle time drives the Performance component of OEE. Performance is actual quantity produced divided by the possible parts at plan cycle time, calculated only while the machine is running. When real cycle time creeps past plan cycle time, performance drops even though the line looks fine on a walk of the floor. That’s the loss most plants miss until they can see it.
Nulogy Smart Factory pulls cycle time straight from the machine, through a PLC connection, a Banner wireless sensor, or an Advantech gateway, so it’s not something an operator has to log by hand. Every quantity and downtime event is timestamped against the cell, so plan cycle time, actual cycle time, and the gap between them show up on the dashboard in real time instead of at the end of a shift.
Yes. Smart Factory records the ideal, plan, and actual cycle time for every machine, part, and work order, so a Pareto chart or an alert can surface a line that’s quietly running behind before it turns into a bigger OEE problem. Most customers see a 10 to 20% OEE increase in their first year once losses like this become visible.
Often, yes. Smart Factory lets you set cycle time at the machine, the part, or the work order level, and the more specific override always wins. That matters on lines running dozens of SKUs, where one machine-level number would hide how much slower, or faster, a particular part actually runs.
