The Problem With Running VAS on a WMS

For 3PLs, Co-Packing Gets Missed Between Systems

Your WMS was built to receive, store and ship. The moment a brand asks you to kit, rework, relabel or build displays, the work moves into spreadsheets, where you lose sight of the big picture.

Warehouse → Production A pallet leaves the rack for a rework job.

The WMS sees the pallet leave. The WMS does not see the cartons, labels and shrink wrap that go into the job, or what comes back out. That is your transitional inventory, and most of it is off-system.

Production → Billing A brand asks why the invoice is higher than the quote.

If labor and materials were tracked on paper, the honest answer is that nobody is sure. The work happened; the evidence did not.

Customer → Operations A brand wants proof you can fulfill its co-pack needs.

Winning or expanding the contract depends on showing real job data, lot traceability and quality records; not a slide about capability.

Everywhere at Once A brand asks for traceability on expiry dates.

The answer lives in receiving, the co-pack job and outbound shipping at once. Kuehne + Nagel's Netherlands team used to spend hours answering that question. Now they respond in minutes.

Value-added co-packing is a production operation inside a warehouse business. Run these jobs on production-focused software and they transform from a cost center you can't measure into a profit center you can.

What We Cover

Six Moments. One System.

Every one of these tasks runs on the same pallets, the same lots and the same customer accounts. That's what separates a manufacturing operating system from a WMS with workarounds.

1

The Co-Pack Job Is Running

Kitting, rework, relabeling, display builds. Shop Floor runs each value-added job like the production job it is: scheduled by line, scanned as it runs, with output, labor and materials recorded against the customer. CEVA Logistics put four co-pack sites in Turkey on Shop Floor within 12 months, and every site improved its performance.

2

The Material Has To Be Accounted For

Packaging materials and non-SKU components are where VAS inventory goes missing. Shop Floor tracks them through receiving, staging and consumption on each job. Kinaxia Logistics automates stock transfer requests through Shop Floor's integration with its WMS, and Prism eLogistics went from about 20% confidence in its stock numbers to 100%.

3

The Pallet Has To Be Where the System Says

Every pallet is scanned at receipt, putaway, pick and production, so the location in the system is the location on the floor. For the warehousing next to your co-pack operation, Nulogy Warehouse Management runs pallet-in, pallet-out storage on the same platform, with receiving, directed putaway, picking, lot and expiry tracking and a browser-based forklift app. Nulogy Warehouse Management is built for about a ten-day implementation at a site where a tier 1 WMS would be overkill.

Why One System

In a 3PL, the pallet, the co-pack job and the invoice are the same event. Only the software splits them up.

4

The Lot Has To Be Traceable

Lot and expiry data follow the product from the inbound pallet, through the co-pack job, to the outbound shipment. Prism eLogistics cut recall reporting from nine hours to 20 minutes, and Kuehne + Nagel in the Netherlands now answers brand questions on expiry-date traceability in minutes instead of hours.

5

The Work Has To Be Billed

Labor and materials recorded against each customer job turn the invoice into a record instead of an estimate. Capacity LLC uses per-project labor allocation in Shop Floor for more accurate staffing and quotes, and says execution and billing are faster and more accurate as a result. Kuehne + Nagel's Netherlands packaging team responds to requests for quotation in half the time.

The Brand Is on the Phone

"Where is my order?" "How much of my stock is left?" "Can you take on another promotion?" With jobs, inventory and lots in one place, your team answers on the call, and brand partners get production timeline updates without anyone walking the floor to check. That is what Capacity LLC's customers get today.

Six moments, one record. The pallet you received, the job that consumed it, the hours that went into it and the invoice that billed it are the same data, not three systems and a spreadsheet.

Start Where You Are

Where Value-Added Services Sit in Your Business

Some 3PLs run a dedicated co-pack operation. Others manage warehousing for brand customers across several sites. Most do both. The platform is the same; the first module is not.

Questions We Get

Before You Book Anything

We already have a WMS. Why add Shop Floor?

Because a WMS is built to receive, store and ship, and co-pack work is production. WMS kitting modules tend to run out of road on packaging materials, non-SKU components and job-level labor, which is where VAS margin lives. Shop Floor runs that work and integrates with your WMS. Kinaxia Logistics, for example, automates stock transfer requests between the two.

Is Nulogy Warehouse Management a replacement for our main WMS?

Usually not. Nulogy Warehouse Management is built for smaller, pallet-in, pallet-out sites where extending a tier 1 system costs more than the site needs, or where a spreadsheet is the current WMS. Nulogy Warehouse Management runs on the same platform as Shop Floor, so the satellite site and the co-pack operation share one record.

Can we bill customers more accurately for value-added work?

That is one of the main reasons 3PLs move VAS onto Shop Floor. Labor and materials are recorded against each customer job as the work happens. Capacity LLC uses per-project labor allocation in Shop Floor for more accurate staffing and quotes, and says execution and billing are faster and more accurate.

We run sites in several countries. Does that work?

Yes. CEVA Logistics rolled Shop Floor out to four co-pack sites in Turkey within 12 months, Kuehne + Nagel runs Shop Floor in Belgium and the Netherlands, Kinaxia Logistics runs Shop Floor across three UK sites, and Capacity LLC operates in the US, UK and India.

How long does implementation take?

Weeks, not months. Prism eLogistics went live on Shop Floor in under 30 days. Nulogy Warehouse Management is built for about a ten-day implementation at a smaller warehouse site.

Do we have to buy everything at once?

No. Most 3PLs start with Shop Floor where the co-pack work lives, then add Nulogy Warehouse Management at warehouse sites, or Quality & Compliance when a brand customer's audit program demands it.

How long before Shop Floor is doing something useful?

Weeks, not quarters. We would rather show you than promise you. Bring your hardest customer to the demo and we will tell you what Shop Floor does about it and what Shop Floor does not.
