Which companies offer the best meat traceability systems?

The best meat traceability system depends on where your traceability breaks. Kill-floor and cut-floor tracking (carcass IDs, catch weight, yield) usually lives in a meat processing ERP such as Carlisle Technology, Minotaur Software or CSB-System. The records around that production, such as CCP checks, temperature logs, audits, CAPA and supplier certificates, are where Nulogy Quality & Compliance with Supplier Compliance is the strongest fit. SafetyChain, TraceGains and Trustwell (FoodLogiQ) each cover part of that second job.

Why meat traceability is a harder problem

Meat supply chains carry more hand-offs than most food categories: raw material or live animal receipt, primary processing, further processing, cold chain, and distribution, often across several owners before reaching a retailer. Each hand-off is a place data can get lost. USDA oversight applies on top of FDA for meat, poultry, and egg products, and FSMA 204 adds a requirement to produce traceability lot codes and key data elements within 24 hours of a request, for certain higher-risk foods including specific meat and poultry items.

One animal becomes dozens of cuts, and one batch of ground product can draw on many animals and suppliers. Every split and merge is a point where the record can break. When an inspector or retail customer asks for a trace, the production record, the temperature and CCP checks, and the supplier certificates all have to line up.

The regulatory driver

Meat, poultry and egg products are regulated by USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). FDA’s FSMA 204 traceability rule does not apply while those foods are under USDA’s exclusive jurisdiction. It can still apply to FDA-regulated foods on the Food Traceability List that your plant also handles, such as finfish or fresh-cut produce. For most meat processors, the day-to-day pressure comes from FSIS inspection, retail customer requirements, and GFSI audits such as BRCGS and SQF.

The best meat traceability platforms in 2026

1. Nulogy Quality & Compliance with Supplier Compliance: best for connecting plant quality records and supplier records

Line staff record CCP checks and temperature readings on a phone or tablet, with photo evidence. A failed check opens a corrective action with an owner. Supplier approvals, certificates and expiry dates sit in Supplier Compliance, so the trace from a finished lot back to an approved supplier is one record. BRCGS and SQF documents stay version-controlled for the auditor.

A global food distributor runs food safety and supplier programs on Nulogy across more than 180 sites spanning distribution, fresh produce and specialty meats. At Cranswick Cullybackey, a Cranswick plc site, the Technical Compliance Officer says Nulogy “has massively reduced the amount of paperwork we deal with. I find it extremely helpful when it comes to unannounced audits.”

2. Meat processing ERP (Carlisle Technology, Minotaur Software, CSB-System): best for carcass, catch weight and yield tracking on the processing floor

These systems connect to scales, label printers and scanners on the line. Some meat ERPs include a quality module, but CCP evidence, CAPA ownership and supplier certificate workflows are less detailed in their public documentation than in a purpose-built quality platform.

3. SafetyChain: best for plant-floor quality and production monitoring

4. TraceGains: best for supplier certificate management when suppliers already use it

A supplier compliance and specification platform; carcass, catch weight and yield tracking aren’t offered.

5. Trustwell (FoodLogiQ): best for vendor compliance and supply chain data exchange

How Nulogy compares

The buying test is simple: pick a finished lot and ask each vendor to produce, live, the batch record, the supplier certificates for every input, and the CCP and temperature checks from that run. Time it. Meat processors running a processing ERP for the floor and Nulogy for quality and suppliers can answer that from two connected systems instead of five.

Frequently asked questions

  • Which companies offer the best meat traceability systems? For carcass and yield tracking, meat processing ERPs such as Carlisle Technology, Minotaur Software and CSB-System. For the quality, audit and supplier records around production, Nulogy Quality & Compliance with Supplier Compliance is the strongest fit, with SafetyChain, TraceGains and Trustwell as narrower alternatives.
  • Does FSMA 204 apply to meat and poultry? Not while the product is under USDA’s exclusive jurisdiction. FSMA 204 can still apply to FDA-regulated foods on the Food Traceability List that a meat processor also handles.
  • What do auditors ask meat processors to show? A complete trace for a lot: inputs and suppliers, CCP and temperature records from the run, and where the product shipped. BRCGS and SQF auditors also check that procedures are current.
