What changed from Issue 8 to Issue 9 of the BRCGS Global Standard for Food Safety, and what auditors now expect from food manufacturers, processors, and distributors.
Download the guide and see what Issue 9 asks of your food safety and quality program.
The BRCGS Global Standard for Food Safety is recognized worldwide as a benchmark for food manufacturers, and Issue 9 is the version sites are audited against today.
Issue 9 keeps the core of earlier issues: senior management commitment, a food safety plan based on HACCP, and a supporting quality management system. It also adds new and expanded requirements, from food safety culture plans to equipment design and label claim validation.

What's new for food manufacturers, processors, and distributors.
Highlights of what's new or expanded compared with Issue 8.
Sites need a documented plan to develop and improve their food safety culture, reviewed at least once a year.
The HACCP plan must be validated, prerequisite programs that control specific hazards need validation, and changes are checked before they go live.
Food defence requirements are extended, with a threat assessment that can be combined with your food fraud vulnerability work.
Equipment requirements are substantially revised, covering hygienic design, buying new or used equipment, and installation.
Label claims must be validated, and outsourced processing now has to be covered in the HACCP plan and in agreed specifications.
A mandatory unannounced audit at least every three years, clearer root cause analysis, and internal audit results feeding management review.
BRCGS (Brand Reputation Compliance Global Standards) publishes certification standards for food safety, packaging, storage and distribution, and more. Its Global Standard for Food Safety is benchmarked by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) and is widely required by retailers and brand owners.
BRCGS published Issue 9 in August 2022. All audits from February 1, 2023 onward have been conducted against Issue 9.
A documented food safety culture plan, validation of the HACCP plan and hazard-controlling prerequisite programs, extended food defence requirements, revised equipment and hygienic design rules, label claim validation, and a mandatory unannounced audit at least every three years.
Three: an announced audit, a blended announced audit (a remote document review followed by an on-site audit), and an unannounced audit. Every site also needs at least one unannounced audit every three years.
Not yet. BRCGS has Issue 10 in development, and Issue 9 remains the version sites are audited against today.
