The Problem With Buying by Category

In Automotive, a Defect Never Stays in One Department

When software gets bought by category, you end up with a QMS here, an OEE tool there and a supplier portal somewhere else. Then a single escape touches all three, and the answer lives in none of them.

Quality → Production Your customer flags a suspect lot.

You have to contain it now, in your plant, in transit and at the OEM. When the inspection record and the production record live in different systems, containment starts with a hunt for which shift ran it, on which press, from which material lot.

Supplier → Quality A sub-tier supplier changes a process.

Your customer expects you to know before those parts reach your line. When supplier documents live in an inbox, you find out at incoming inspection, or worse, at your customer's dock.

Production → Delivery A press goes down mid-shift.

This is a delivery problem before it is a maintenance problem. If nobody sees the stop until the end-of-shift report, the schedule catches up with it at the shipping dock, and overtime pays for it.

Everywhere at Once An OEM sends an audit notice.

They want the control plan, the audit results, the training records and the open corrective actions, by line and by part number. Pulling that out of four systems turns into somebody's whole project.

One operating system is not a software preference. In automotive it is the path a defect already travels. The software should follow the same path.

A Day at an Automotive Supplier

Six Moments in a Supplier's Day

This is not a method or a sequence of steps. These are six ordinary moments in a Tier 1 or Tier 2 plant, and the Nulogy product that covers each one.

1

Start of Shift: The Presses Are Running

The first shift starts the presses and the count begins. Smart Factory connects to old and new machines through a PLC connection, a Banner wireless sensor or an Advantech gateway, so the count comes off the equipment instead of a paper sheet. OEE, downtime and scrap show up live by line and by shift, and scoreboards on the floor show the crew the same numbers the plant manager sees.

2

Mid-Morning: The Part Has To Pass

Quality runs line checks on whatever device is at hand, with photos and timestamps instead of a clipboard. When a check fails, the issue moves to CAPA or 8D, linked to the product and batch it came from. Review and release happen with e-signature and an audit trail, and Quality & Compliance tracks FPY, PPM and closures as the work happens.

3

Late Morning: A Press Stops

Smart Factory alerts the moment a line stops, so the stop is seen when it happens, not on the end-of-shift report. H&T Waterbury, a precision components manufacturer, found its micro stoppage problem was bigger than the team anticipated, then cut micro stoppages by 71%. Nulogy Maintenance triggers work from machine condition and usage signals, keeps machine data, downtime tracking and work orders in one system, and prioritizes work by production impact.

Why One Operating System

In an automotive plant, a quality escape, a late shipment and a down press can all start from the same event. The software should not split them up.

4

Afternoon: The Supplier Has To Be Approved

A new sub-tier supplier has to be approved before its parts reach your line. Supplier Compliance runs supplier onboarding, approvals and risk assessments, tracks supplier performance, and gives suppliers a portal for their documents and corrective actions, so supplier quality is not working from an inbox. Autoliv, the world's largest automotive safety supplier, governs more than 3,000 suppliers through Nulogy, with supplier qualification and scorecards under IATF 16949 and VDA 6.3.

5

End of Shift: The Count Has To Be Right

When production counts come off the machine instead of a clipboard, the end-of-shift number is the number the machines recorded. Ice Industries, an automotive and HVAC stamper with five plants in the US and Mexico, reached 100% inventory accuracy on its physical count, accurate to the part and to the pound of steel, and eliminated $100K of inventory write-offs in a single cycle.

Any Time: The OEM Is on the Phone

How is my order running, what happened with that lot, and what are you doing about it. Smart Factory shows what ran on each line and shift. Quality & Compliance links each issue and corrective action to the product and batch, and keeps audit-ready records across sites. The answer comes from the record, not from an afternoon of exports.

Nora Answers Questions About Your Lines

Nora is the AI assistant built into Smart Factory and Maintenance. For automotive suppliers running Smart Factory on press and assembly lines, Nora answers in plain English from what actually happened: counts, downtime, scrap and maintenance history, not a report somebody compiled at the end of the week.

→Why did Press 4 lose time on second shift?
→What was OEE on Line 2 yesterday?
→Which presses had the most downtime this week?
→Show me overdue maintenance work orders.

Start Where You Are

Where You Sit in the Supply Chain

Some automotive suppliers run their own lines. Some manage a supply base underneath them. Many do both. The operating system is the same; the first module is not.

Questions We Get

Before You Book Anything

We already have an ERP and an MES. Where does Nulogy fit?

Closer to the press than the ERP reaches. The ERP owns orders, BOMs and financials; the ERP does not see a press micro-stopping since the start of shift or a supplier approval that lapsed. Smart Factory, Quality & Compliance and Supplier Compliance cover what ran, what was checked and what your suppliers sent, and we will walk through how they sit alongside your ERP and MES on the demo.

Our presses are decades old. Can you still get data off them?

Yes. Smart Factory connects to old and new machines through a direct PLC connection, a Banner wireless sensor or an Advantech gateway. Bring a list of your oldest equipment to the demo and we will talk through how Smart Factory connects to each machine.

Will our suppliers actually use the portal?

That is the right question to ask of any supplier portal. Supplier Compliance gives suppliers one portal for their documents and corrective actions, and Autoliv governs more than 3,000 suppliers through Nulogy. Bring your hardest sub-tier supplier to the demo and we will walk through what onboarding them looks like.

Does Quality & Compliance replace our IATF 16949 quality system?

Quality & Compliance covers quality work an IATF 16949 system relies on: specs and document control, line checks with evidence, issues to CAPA or 8D linked to product and batch, review and release with e-signature and audit trail, and supplier performance. Whether Quality & Compliance becomes your system of record or feeds one is a decision we make with you.

Do we have to buy everything at once?

No. Start with the product that covers your most expensive problem and add the others as you need them. Ice Industries uses Smart Factory and Maintenance together. On the production side, most Smart Factory customers see a 10 to 20% OEE increase in their first year.

What about environment, health and safety?

Nulogy EHS covers incident reporting, audits, asset checks and hazard management. Ask about Nulogy EHS on the demo if safety is on your list.
